How long should a blog post be?

The length of an effective and engaging blog post has always been a topic of genuine inquiry amongst bloggers, marketers and business owners. There are some people who believe that blog posts should be short and concise to keep the readers interested and waiting for the next posts. At the same time, there is no dearth of experts who feel that there should not be any restriction on the length of a blog post if it is interesting for the audience.

The thing to remember is that there is no best word count for every blog post. There are topics that need a much longer word count to furnish all the details and information necessary for the readers. If you are a blogger, it is difficult to know the optimum word count that is perfect for your readers. There are many experts who say that shorter is sweeter and that blog length should never be more than 600 words. These experts say that readers have a short attention span and they do not like to go through long and boring blog posts. These experts say that to get more readers, bloggers should write blogs that are short and can be read in just a few minutes.

If you look at blog posts by popular bloggers in different niches, you will come across different blog lengths.  If there are mini blog posts containing 100-200 words, there are also blog posts with more than 2000 and even 3000 words. Short, 300-word blog posts are better if the intention of the blogger is to encourage readers to ask questions and to start a discussion. It is seen that bloggers who write short posts around 275-300 words get most comments from their readers.

However, short blog posts are not shared on social media platforms and they are not noticed by search engines also. If your goal is SEO of your website, it is better to write blog posts containing 500 or more words. These posts are also widely shared by readers on Facebook and Twitter.

You are free to decide the word count of your blog posts provided you keep them interesting for your readers. Medium length blogs containing more than 600 words but less than 1200 words are not only good for the purpose of SEO, but they also get shared and start a discussion among readers. Google becomes interested when blog posts are long and thoroughly researched.
